Speed, no helmet factors in fatal crash on Pali

Advertiser Staff

A 30-year-old Kane'ohe man was killed yesterday when the motorcycle he was riding slammed into the back of a Toyota van that had been involved moments earlier in a three-vehicle collision in the Kailua-bound lanes of the Pali Highway about half of mile up-slope from the Nu'uanu Pali Drive.

The collision occurred about 4:15 p.m., snarling peak-hour, after-work traffic on the busy highway which was shut down in the Kailua direction while police conducted an investigation of the crash.

Police said speed appeared to be a factor in the crash, but could not immediately say if drugs or alcohol played a part.

The motorcycle operator, who was not wearing a helmet, received severe head and chest injuries in the crash and was declared dead at the scene, police said.

Yesterday's fatality brings the traffic death toll on O'ahu to 58 this year, compared to 51 during the same period last year.
