The Aug. 16, 1907, Pacific Commercial Advertiser reported on the departure of Jack London on his ketch Snark.

1906: A 12-foot tsunami damages the new wharf at McGregor's landing on Maui and destroys the wharf at Ma'alaea Bay.

1929: The Advertiser reports the board of agriculture is calling the termite problem in Honolulu "hopeless" unless new buildings are made termite-proof. Termite invasions were particularly bad in school buildings, the paper reported.

1947: An Army B-17 crashes into rough water 45 miles off Barbers Point 35 minutes before the plane was scheduled to land at Hickam. Ten of the 13 aboard the plane are killed, including George Atcheson Jr., the ranking U.S. diplomat in Japan.

1974: Howard Hughes' Glomar Explorer drops anchor off Lahaina. News accounts at the time speculated the ship was retrieving manganese nodules. The following year it was revealed the ship had recovered part of a sunken Soviet submarine.

1977: Elvis Presley dies at the age of 42. His first Island appearance was on Nov. 10, 1957, in a concert at Honolulu Stadium. His Bloch Arena concert on March 25, 1961, was a fundraiser for the Arizona Memorial.

2003: Hilo wins the Senior League World Series championship in Bangor, Maine.

2004: Some 3,600 National Guard and Reserve members in Hawai'i officially give up their civilian lives and report for 18 months of active military duty, including a year in Iraq.
