BUSINESS BRIEFS
Possible buyers in talks for HIG

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i Insurance Commissioner J.P. Schmidt yesterday obtained an order of liquidation from a state court for Hawaiian Insurance & Guaranty Co. as part of a plan to sell the company.

Schmidt said he remains in negotiations with potential buyers in the hopes of closing a deal by the end of the month. He said confidentiality agreements prevent him from discussing the interested purchasers.

The company will be closed and Hawaiian Insurance's policies will be canceled if Schmidt isn't successful in finding a buyer and closing the sale.

"There are some very positive signs that we will be successful, but it's a very complex situation," Schmidt said.

BOOK PROVIDES WEALTH OF DATA

The Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism today released the 38th annual edition of the State of Hawaii Data Book on its Web site at www.hawaii.gov/dbedt.

The book has 797 tables covering geographical, social, economic and political information relating to Hawai'i. Here's some of the information available in the book:

  • The sales receipts for establishments with no paid employees grew at a faster rate for Hawai'i than for the nation as a whole between 2000 and 2004.

  • Hawai'i ranked 13th in the nation in 2004 for workers holding more than one job.
