Fashion trends

By Paula Rath
Advertiser Staff Writer

Neiman Marcus has trend watchers who make sure their stores are on target. The top 10 trends for fall are featured through Aug. 26 at the Ala Moana store: Look for mannequins in the latest looks to inspire updates for your wardrobe.

NEIMAN MARCUS' TOP 10 TRENDS:

1. Black-and-gold handbags

2. The red shoe

3. The belt

4. The tunic

5. The white shirt

6. Narrow pants

7. The dress

8. The bold gold necklace

9. Black leggings

10. Boots and booties (ankle-highs are hot)

Naturally, you would not want to put too many trends together. Pick one and make that your signature for fall.

As for color, Neiman Marcus says red is the pop color for the season, while Pantone, the color experts who guide fashion designers, says blues, especially those with some gray, will be hip and cool.

BACK TO SCHOOL, HONOLULU-STYLE

Meanwhile, the folks at Ala Moana Center have been tracking what's flying off the shelves for back-to-school. This gives an idea of what trends will translate from the runway to the real way in Honolulu. Here's what they spotted:

  • Tiny and trendy: mini backpacks by O'Neill and Dakine from Up & Riding.

  • Wider is better: Wide belts with a flash of color or texture at Arden B.

  • Head games: Wide plastic headbands in red, white, black, plum or camouflage from Claire's.

  • Ultra-feminine tops: Ruffled sleeves, lacy layers and other girly-girl features are popular at American Eagle Outfitters.

  • Prep school: Guys are taking to clean-cut preppy polos with their jeans. Old Navy has them in brights, solids and stripes.

  • That '70s shoe: Vans, lace-up and slip-on versions, are a fun and funky way to finish a look. They're getting scooped up at Blue Hawaii Surf.
