Ex-UH players help USA win in volleyball

The United States women's national team evened its 2006 World Grand Prix record at 1-1 yesterday with a 26-24, 25-22, 18-25, 25-21 victory over Poland (0-2), in front of 6,300 fans at Luczniczka Hall in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

Italy (2-0) swept Dominican Republic (1-1), 25-17, 25-17, 25-18, in the same Group C.

The U.S. faces Italy today.

Starters included former Rainbow Wahine Heather Bown and Therese Crawford and Punahou graduate Lindsey Berg. Bown had 12 points and Berg three.

"We are pleased with our game," Berg said. "We put our whole heart in it."

Team USA hit .245 behind the setting of Berg. The United States held Poland to a .204 attack percentage, .023 in the final game.

The World Grand Prix has three weeks of round robin group play at various locations. The top five from the preliminary rounds of group play, together with Italy as host country, advance to finals Sept. 6 to 10.


TENNIS

MAUI PLAYER ENTERED IN WHEELCHAIR U.S. OPEN

Maui's Beth Arnoult-Ritthaler, the 12th-ranked women's wheelchair player in the world, will play in the U.S. Open Wheelchair Tennis Competition.

The event, in its second year, is Sept. 7 to 10 at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.

The competition features 16 (eight men and eight women) of the top wheelchair tennis athletes from around the globe and features men's and women's singles and doubles.

The top seven ranked players to enter and one wild card were selected in both divisions. Total purse is $50,000.

Defending singles champions are Esther Vergeer and Robin Ammerlaan, both of the Netherlands.

Arnoult and 20th-ranked Kaitlyn Verfuerth are the only American women in the event.

HAWAI'I'S TORRES WINS BOUT IN LAS VEGAS

Hawai'i's Anthony Torres defeated Missouri's Pat Healy at the Ultimate Fight Night 6 mixed martial arts card last night at Las Vegas.

Torres won by choke submission, 2 minutes, 37 seconds into the first round.

Torres improved to 4-1, and Healy dropped to 15-10.
