AUGUST 19

A story in the Aug. 19, 1899, Pacific Commercial Advertiser related the story of the clock on the Catholic Mission, now the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace. The clock was made in Paris in 1825, sent to Valparaiso, Chile, in 1842, and then to Hawai'i in 1854.

1928: The Advertiser reports it is in negotiations to sell its building at 217 S. King St. to Samuel W. King Ltd. for $148,000. The paper says it is planning to move to a site at the corner of South Street and Kapi'olani Boulevard.

1954: The Army announces that the 25th Division, which was at Schofield Barracks when World War II began, is returning to Hawai'i. The plan to withdraw the unit from Japan and base it in Hawai'i was designed to improve the U.S. strategic position in the Pacific.

1960: A Hickam-based C-119 Flying Boxcar makes aerospace history off Hawai'i by snagging a space capsule in midair after its return from outer space. The parachuting nose cone of the Discoverer XIV satellite was snagged 8,500 feet above the Pacific.
