1931: The sheriff's office may be asked to police O'ahu's beaches, The Advertiser reports, because of complaints about weekend parties.
1932: The Advertiser reports the number of cases of Hansen's disease is decreasing, with 592 active cases at Kalihi and Kalaupapa. That was the lowest number on record.
1936: The Waikiki Theater opens to the public. More than 3,000 people attended the dedication in the theater's tropical garden.
1948: Ground is broken for the new $1 million Iolani School on 25 acres on the mauka side of the Ala Wai Canal. The property was the site of the Army's base yard No. 6 during World War II. Iolani School had been at Nu'uanu and Judd Streets.
1969: The city orders 22 servicemen in sanctuary at Church of the Crossroads because of their opposition to the Vietnam War to move out within 10 days. The city cited violations of building and health regulations.
1994: Tyke, a 9,000-pound African elephant, charges through the streets of Kaka'ako after she went wild during a performance of Circus International. The elephant killed a trainer, broke from Blaisdell Center and was finally shot to death by police.
1999: Bishop Estate trustee Gerard Jervis resigns. The Internal Revenue Service had threatened to revoke the charitable trust's tax-exempt status if the trustees did not resign.
2003: U.S. District Judge David Ezra orders Kamehameha Schools to enroll a non-Hawaiian student. Ezra said his decision was meant solely to provide a fair resolution for the then-13-year-old boy, who had been accepted for admission but then the school had rescinded the acceptance.
