Kona-based credit union is latest phishing target

By Greg Wiles
Advertiser Staff Writer

The Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union, the largest Kona-based credit union, is warning members of a bogus-e-mail seeking personal information. The credit union is sending out its own e-mails warning of the "phishing" attack and placing an alert on its Web site.

Hawaii Community is the fourth Hawai'i-based credit union that's been the subject of a phishing attack this month. Financial institutions say they generally don't ask for sensitive information via e-mails or include links to other sites where members are asked to input account details.

Customers who get an e-mail asking for personal information or to click on a link to another site, should delete the message.
