Young Brothers: No change to Maui shipping service

Advertiser Staff

Young Brothers Ltd., is withdrawing its request to discontinue "less than container load" service to and from Maui, under an agreement with the state announced today.

Under the agreement with the state, Young Brothers will continue to provide less than container load service for Kahului and Hilo at least until Jan. 1, 2010. It will provide the service for Kona, Honolulu, Moloka'i, Lana'i and Lihue until at least Jan. 1, 2012.

In exchange, the state will provide Young Brothers with additional land and improvements in Kahului, Honolulu, Hilo and Kona.

Young Brothers in April asked the state to allow the company to discontinue the service to and from Maui beginning Jan. 1, saying it wouldn't have enough room for the service when the state reallocates 23 percent of its existing Kahului facility in early 2007 to begin construction in preparation for Hawaii Superferry operations.

The request drew strong opposition from small business, farmers and others who said the proposal would lead to higher costs and delayed shipments.
