Hawai'i gymnast wins gold in Mexico

Hawai'i's Nani Vercruyssen won the only gold medal for the United States at the Pan American Trampoline Championships this weekend in Monterrey, Mexico.
The 14-year-old Roosevelt High School ninth grader was one of 12 U.S. gymnasts on the men's and women's junior and senior teams who competed against athletes from Argentina, Brazil, Canada and Mexico.
The U.S. won six medals, but Vercruyssen's was the only gold.
"It's really neat standing on the awards stand with the American flag on top and hearing the American anthem played for everyone," said Vercruyssen, whose routine was the fourth most difficult in the competition with a 13.2 degree of difficulty.

RODRIGUEZ CROWNED AMATOUR CHAMPION
Samuel Rodriguez III shot a 3-over-par 75 yesterday for a four-stroke victory in the Amatour Hawaii 2006 Kane'ohe Klipper Battle at the Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course.
Rodriguez, who led after the first day with a 67, finished the two-day tournament at 2-under 142.
Allan King shot 75 yesterday and finished second at 146.
Defending champion Mike Kuwate finished tied for eighth at 74—149.
HAWAI'I TAKES SEVENTH AT HOGAN CUP EVENT
Hawai'i junior golfers finished in seventh place in the 38th Eddie Hogan Cup Team Matches yesterday at the Riverside Golf & Country Club at Portland, Ore.
Hawai'i shot a 7-over-par 223 yesterday to finish the two-day tournament at 13-over 445.
Southern California won with its 10-under 422.
Big Island's Henry Park shot an even-par 72 and finished tied for 10th at 2-over 146, nine strokes behind winner Alex Shi Yup Kim of Southern California.
Other Hawai'i golfers were: Maui's Nick Shimozaki (81-151, t-23rd), Big Island's Max Bonk (74-154, t-28th), and O'ahu's Colton Knedler (77-155, t-30th).
