Big Island police investigating partial skull found by dog

Advertiser Staff

A dog who returned home with a partial skull has led Big Island police to investigate whether the remains belong to a Puna woman who was reported missing in May.

The partial skull was reported by a Fern Forest resident on July 26, who said it was discovered near the home of 74-year-old Elizabeth Christensen, who was reported missing on May 15, 2006.

Detectives and a scent-tracking dog searched the area without finding any other remains.

The partial skull is being sent to a Mainland laboratory for DNA comparison with samples from one of Christensen's relatives. Big Island police say results may not be known for several months.

The condition of the partial skull did not lend itself to dental comparison analysis.
