State's quarter design narrowed to five themes

Poll: Which theme do you prefer?

Advertiser Staff

A state commission has agreed on five design themes for the Hawai'i quarter, which is set to be released in fall 2008.

The Hawai'i Commemorative Quarter Advisory Commission released the themes at a news conference today. They are:

• Surfing: Hawai'i's gift to the world, which will depict a surfer on a long board with Diamond Head and the island chain in the background.

• Aloha spirit: which will show a hula dancer and a maile lei with the island chain above the dancer and the word "aloha" at the bottom.

• Diamond Head: which will show the west profile of Diamond Head and the full statue of King Kamehameha I.

• Hawai'i, the island state: which will depict the eight major Hawaiian Islands and King Kamehameha.

• Hawai'i, diverse but unified: which will show King Kamehameha and the Hawaiian Islands in relief.

The themes with descriptions will be sent to the U.S. Mint, where designers will create between 10 and 12 designs. The commission will rank the designs, and Gov. Linda Lingle will recommend one to the U.S. Mint.
