Hoku shares close at $3.83

Shares of Kapolei-based Hoku Scientific Inc. yesterday soared 43 percent, or $1.16 a share, to close at $3.83 on the Nasdaq National Market. Nearly 1.65 million shares of Hoku changed hands, compared with an average daily trading volume of about 222,000 shares.

Hoku General Counsel Scott Paul said the company had no explanation for the jump in its shares. Hoku shares have traded in a range of $2.12 to $13.43 over the past year.


MOBI'S O'AHU CALLERS CAN ROAM

Wireless phone company Mobi PCS yesterday launched a roaming service that will allow its O'ahu customers to use their phones while on the Mainland.

Mobi's introductory rate for Mainland roaming is 29 cents a minute during 2006. The roaming service will be available soon on the Neighbor Islands.


HAWAI'I-MADE MAKES $3 MILLION

Last week's Made in Hawaii Festival at Blaisdell Exhibition Hall and Arena drew 35,000 attendees over three days and generated $3 million in sales, organizers said.

The annual event featured Hawai'i-made products, clothing and home furnishings, plus cooking demonstrations and entertainment.


OUTRIGGER DEAL DOWN UNDER

Outrigger Enterprises Group yesterday said it's selling its management rights and associated real estate interests for 13 properties in Australia and New Zealand to MFS Limited, a publicly-held Australian investment firm.

The transaction, expected to close by the end of the year, includes management rights for six projects under development. Outrigger's brand rights and the company's other Pacific operations are not included in the transaction.

Outrigger will use the proceeds received from the transaction to reinvest in new opportunities in Australia, New Zealand and other markets in the Asia-Pacific region, said Outrigger Enterprises Group president and CEO David Carey.
