The War Memorial Commission decides to build a swimming tank at Waikiki, according to this story in the Aug. 23, 1924, Advertiser. The Natatorium opened three years later.

1884: Love's Bakery and five adjoining buildings on Nu'uanu Street are destroyed in a fire.

1903: A ceremony at Our Lady of Peace Cathedral officially marks the return of the new bishop of the Catholic Mission in Hawai'i. The Rt. Rev. Libert Boeynaems, who was named vicar apostolic of the Hawaiian Islands earlier in 1903, was ordained a bishop on the West Coast in July.

1920: Duke Kahanamoku ties the Olympic record in the 100-meter freestyle swim in Antwerp.

1971: Mayor Frank Fasi declares Honolulu to be in a state of emergency because of the 54-day-old West Coast shipping strike and said his administration will charter, own or operate vessels to bring in food and goods to Hawai'i if necessary.

1980: Six guards and seven inmates are injured in a fight at the Halawa High Security Facility that touches off an angry rampage by other inmates and a tense four-hour standoff with police.
