Big Island police asking for help to capture arsonist

Advertiser Staff

Big Island police are once again asking the public's help in identifying whoever is responsible for the burglary and suspicious fire in June at Waiakea Intermediate school on Puainako Street in south Hilo.

At 8:15 a.m. on June 18, a school employee discovered an apparent break-in at the library. One or more suspects also set a fire in the library but it apparently extinguished itself before spreading.

Following inventory of the library's contents, police learned that a trophy was stolen. It was later recovered at a different location on campus.

The damage to the interior of the library and its contents was estimated at $4,500.

Police are asking anyone with information to call Det. Greg Esteban at 961-2384 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in East Hawaii or 329-8181 in West Hawai'i. Calls to Crime Stoppers are kept confidential and are not recorded.
