Students to drape leis over Duke's statue

Advertiser Staff

Native Hawaiian students attending the University of Hawai'i's John A. Burns School of Medicine with financial help from the Nadine Kahanamoku Scholarship Fund will drape lei over Duke Kahanamoku's statute tomorrow on Kuhio Beach.

Fifteen students — 10 of them first-year students — currently receive a total of $150,000 from the Kahanamoku Fund.

Since the Kahanamoku Scholarship program began in 1999, it has provided financial assistance amounting to $1.19 million to 78 UH medical students.

Tomorrow's program begins at 4:15 and includes a lei-draping ceremony at 5:15 p.m., followed by a luau at the Waikiki Aquarium.
