Maui, Big Island under flash flood watch

Advertiser Staff

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch through this evening for Maui and the Big Island.

The Puna and Kau areas of the Big Island are now experiencing heavy showers and rain has been falling since this morning on Maui in the Hana area. Lightening has also been detected on the Big Island, according to the weather service.

Atmospheric conditions are making the conditions ripe for thunderstorms now on the Big Island. The reason is because of an upper low about 350 miles north of Kaua'i that will remain stationary today before moving northward.

Statewide, the weather service is predicting isolated thunderstorms over the rest of the islands today and tonight, especially over interior and mountain areas.

A flash flood watch means that weather conditions are favorable for heavy rain across the watch area.
