Snow surfs to win in longboard event

Ned Snow won the men's division of the Corona Hawaiian Open longboarding contest yesterday, earning $4,000 and denying friend and fellow Hawai'i surfer Kai Sallas a chance at capturing the 2006 U.S. Pro Longboarding Championship tour title.
"I was here to win and I got the waves I needed," said Snow, who was the runner-up in the recent world pro longboarding titles held in Costa Rica. "I had to be on top of my game because all the guys are trying to stick it to me after that result."
Kekoa Uemura placed second, Sallas third and Venton Silliado fourth in the all-Hawai'i final at Kuhio Beach.
No one was more pleased to see Snow triumph than ratings leader Taylor Jensen of San Diego, who had been eliminated from the contest after failing to progress from his first-round heat. Had Sallas won the event, he would have taken the title from Jensen.
"I watched the event from the balcony of my hotel room and I was freaking out the whole time," Jensen said. "This is a huge plus for me."
Lindsay Steinriede won the women's division with fellow Southern Californian Marissa Barry, who was ousted in the quarterfinals, capturing the tour title.
Hawai'i's Ashley Quintal finished second yesterday, followed by Japan's Miku Uemura and Hawai'i's Megan Godinez.
Australia's Chey Morley won the reactor timed noseriding event, followed by Hawai'i's Duane DeSoto, California's Troy Mothershead and Florida's Justin Quintal.

BYUH FINISHES 4-0
Tuli Peters had 24 kills and 15 digs as 21st-ranked Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat Western New Mexico, 30-21, 30-21, 30-20, to finish the Hawaiian Style Classic as the only unbeaten team.
LeeAnn Mapu had 44 assists for the Seasiders, who finished 4-0. Lindsay Morrison led Western New Mexico (2-2) with seven kills.

HURST, ATTEINS FASTEST
Ky Hurst and Bache Atteins captured the open divisions of the Duke's Waikiki Ocean Mile Swim yesterday.
Hurst finished in 21 minutes, 44 seconds. Noa Sakamoto was second in 23:36, followed by Michael Lewandowski in 24:10.
Atteins was the first female finisher in 24:24, followed by Christel Simms in 25:18 and Eliko Heimbach in 25:41.

SOERO, MA SHARE LEAD
Pierre-Henri Soero shot a 71 and Matthew Ma shot a 72 yesterday to share the lead entering the final round of the Barbers Point Invitational.
Soero and Ma are at 138. Henry Park is two strokes back after shooting 69—140.
David Hamada leads A flight by three strokes with 74—146 and Rudy Cabalar Jr. leads B flight by five with 77—157.

WASHINGTON WINS
Shannon Dillon and Shuree Hyatt scored second-half goals as Washington rallied past Oklahoma, 2-1, in the OHANA Hotels & Resorts No Kai Oi Tournament last night at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
The Huskies, who beat host Hawai'i on Friday, clinched the tournament title.
Kady Kelly scored for Oklahoma, which plays the Rainbow Wahine tomorrow at 5.
