Quake off Big Island rattles Islands

Advertiser Staff

A minor earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 3.2 was felt throughout the Islands at 8:10 tonight.

The quake appeared to be centered between Maui and the Big Island but was felt "in Hawai'i Kai from Pearl Center and Ala Moana," said Dr. Robert Cessaro, a geophysicist at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center at 'Ewa Beach.

"It appears to have some depth to it," Cessaro said. "That's why it was felt through the Islands."

Alan Lloyd, a retired engineer, was in his bathroom in Lanikai when "I heard a gradual increasing roar, like a heavy truck going by then a ll of a sudden there was a boom like the truck had a collision."
