Typhoon headed for Wake Island

Two C-17 Globemaster III aircraft were readying to depart Hickam Air Force Base last night to evacuate approximately 200 military personnel, Defense Department civilians and contractors from Wake Island in response to Super Typhoon Ioke.
Ioke is expected to reach Wake Island by tomorrow. A spokeswoman last night described the effort as a "quick-in, quick-out operation" with the evacuees being brought to Hawai'i sometime after 3 p.m. today.
The Wake Island base, a support unit of the U.S. Pacific Command, provides facilities, vehicles, aerospace ground equipment, aviation fuel and bare base assets to sustain aircraft for combat operations. It also provides temporary stationing of forces and acts as a landing area for aircraft during emergencies.
WAIPAHU
EXPECT CLOSED LANES ON HIGHWAY
The state Department of Transportation will be doing repaving work along Farrington Highway in Waipahu from today through Friday.
Lane closures are scheduled in the eastbound direction near Kahi Mohala from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
In addition, the right westbound lane along Farrington Highway will be closed near Paiwa Street from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday for drainage work.
Repaving work was initially set to begin in mid-June, but was delayed because of the recent asphalt shortage. Motorists should anticipate delays and use caution while driving through the work areas.
KAPOLEI
ISLAND PACIFIC HOSTS OPEN HOUSE
Island Pacific Academy will showcase its new $12 million middle- and upper-school building during an open house tomorrow from 6 to 8 p.m.
The academy, which opened in September 2004, is at 909 Haumea St. in Kapolei.
IPA plans to graduate its first high school class in 2010.

THE LINKS GALA HONORS 20 YEARS
The African-American service group, The Links Inc., plans to celebrate 20 years in Hawai'i with a White Rose Gala Event. The Oct. 7 fundraiser will be held at the Plaza Club in downtown Honolulu.
Organizers said tickets are $75 to benefit the 2007 scholarship fund. The Links is a national nonprofit organization of women of color committed to enhancing the quality of life in our communities.
The event will include champagne, pupu, a silent auction, dinner, entertainment and dancing with Bobby Thursby and his band.
