Police Beat: Grandfather turns in grandson for forgery

Advertiser Staff

A 27-year-old Kailua man was arrested yesterday for allegedly cashing two $5,000 checks against his 67-year-old grandfather's account without his grandfather's knowledge or authorization.

Police were told the grandson cashed the first check Aug. 16 and that the grandfather's bank called the grandfather to verify the first check.

By the time the grandfather managed to get to the bank, a second $5,000 check had already been cashed, police were told.

They said the grandfather brought his grandson to the Kailua police station yesterday where the grandson turned himself in in connection with the two checks.

He was arrested on suspicion of two counts of second-degree forgery.

Decomposed dog found wrapped in tarp

Residents of a Kane'ohe townhouse complex are breathing easier today after police were called yesterday evening to investigate concerns that a dead body might have been wrapped up in a tarp and disposed of behind the complex.

Officers arrived about 6:30 p.m., found the tarp and noticed a foul odor coming from the bundle.

While cautiously opening the tarp, police found a second layer of wrapping, one made out of plastic, that had been bound tightly with tape.

The manner in which the second layer was applied fueled speculation that human remains were inside the bundle, police said.

But once the tape and plastic were removed, police found what they described as "an extremely large dog ... in an advanced state of decomposition."

The incident was logged in as an "miscellaneous public" call.
