Automatic telephone service had just begun in Honolulu and the Aug. 29, 1910, Pacific Commercial Advertiser reported on the many problems associated with the switchover. Human error was the source of many of the problems, the newspaper reported.

1915: The submarine F-4 is brought to the surface and towed to Honolulu Harbor. Twenty-one men were killed when the sub sank on March 25.

1920: Duke Kahanamoku wins the 100-meter freestyle event in the Antwerp Olympics.

1935: Heiress Doris Duke and her husband, James Cromwell, arrive in Honolulu on their honeymoon.

1951: The Hawaii 7 are indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of plotting to over-throw the U.S. government by force and violence. They were convicted in 1953, and in 1958, their convictions were over-turned.

1959: William Quinn is inaugurated as governor of the new state.

2005: Hurricane Katrina slams into New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.
