The Aug. 30, 1926, Honolulu Advertiser reported on a California car accident involving the widow of a former governor of Hawai'i.

1926: In response to demand for Hawai'i-grown avocados on the Mainland, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announces it will establish a lab on Maui to determine whether the avocados on Baldwin Ranch are immune from the Mediterranean fruit fly.

1945: The Royal Hawaiian Band greets the Matsonia at Honolulu Harbor. It is the first time since December 1941 that the band has greeted an incoming liner.

1972: President Nixon and Japanese Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka arrive in Honolulu for a summit meeting.

1996: Spence Weaver, who started with a hot-dog stand and parlayed it into a Hawai'i restaurant chain that catered to every food taste, dies at the age of 85. His restaurants included Fisherman's Wharf, the Hob Nob, the Skyroom at the airport, Coco's Coffee House, the Barefoot Bar, M's Ranch House, the Tahitian Lanai, the Lahaina Broiler and the Pioneer Inn. His empire peaked in the 1970s with 30 restaurants in Hawai'i, two hotels in Waikiki, two hotels in Tahiti and more than 2,000 employees.

1997: Princess Diana is killed in a car crash in Paris. She was 36.
