Video Inteview: Samson Satele

GREGORY YAMAMOTO | The Honolulu Advertiser

One of the more decorated linemen, Samson Satele was a first-team all-WAC selection last season, and earned second-team nominations after his freshman and sophomore seasons. The 6-foot-3, 298-pounder this season will move to center, a position that might help his future. Satele allowed just two sacks in 578 pass attempts last season and recorded a team-high 32 knockdowns. He posted the highest grading among offensive linemen in four games.

You decided to come back to school instead of going pro. What do you see as your role in your senior year and how do you see the offensive line performing this year?

"I've seen a lot of seniors come in and try to be a leader, but at the same time they weren't leaders. This year I'm going to try to be a leader and get everybody's respect. I respect them if they respect me. If not, then I would get it from them. This year there's a lot of good players on the team that will do a lot of good things this year. And I just want the best for the team, not for me, but for the team."

(On moving from guard to center)

"It wasn't that hard, because I played three years at left guard and I played next to Derek Faavi and he was one of the smartest centers to play here at Hawai'i, and I learned a lot. So, it wasn't hard for me to move to center."

(On how the offensive line will perform this season)

"This year I must say it, and we're going to do it, too: We're not going to give up no sacks. We're hopefully going to give Nate 1,500 yards and Colt 6,000 yards or plus, or Davone Bess at least more than what he had last year. This year there's a lot of depth at receiver. Guys can go long, guys can go short. Take it from short to long. So, we'll be scoring at least five touchdowns a game. That's what I think.

"I just say if we get through that first half of our season, that's the toughest, our first half. I don't know, if we get past Alabama, if we get out of Tuscaloosa with a win, our season should be a breeze. Going to Boise should be a breeze. Fresno, same thing. I'm very excited to see what we can do the first game."
