Lois Manin is in her 16th year as director of the University of Hawai'i Sports Media Relations Office, whose role is to serve as a liaison between the athletic department and the media. A Kaiser High School and Colorado State alum, Manin's duties include setting up interviews with athletics and officials and helping provide statistical and other pertinent information to local and national media.
You work directly with some the state's most high-profile athletes and personnel. It seems like a cool job. What kind of enjoyment, satisfaction and disappointment (if any) do you get working in a job where you interact on a daily basis with so many high-profile people in the athletic arena, such as the officials, athletes, fans and sports writers?
"Former Warrior football coach Bob Wagner said it best when a reporter asked him why he became a football coach. He said, 'So I don't have to go out and get a real job,' and that's the way I feel about my job. It's not really a job because of my interest in sports, but that doesn't mean it's not challenging.
"Probably the most satisfying part of my job is watching the student-athletes grow while they are here. When the freshmen become seniors. When they finally 'get it,' you know, what life is REALLY all about. When they come back after a graduating, a few years later, and finding out what they are doing in the real world. Some have families, some have great jobs, and some come back to say 'thanks.' You try your best to take care of them while they are here in the athletics department, and hopefully, they do the same for someone else one day."
