Sean Burke, center, and fellow band members, Stacie Hata, left, and Orlando Layugan are dressed for success. Burke says playing can get exciting "in the beginning of the game."

Sean Burke is the UH trumpet section leader and a member of the UH marching band. The band is responsible for entertaining the crowd during lulls in the game and at halftime. Burke is a senior majoring in finance and minoring in music.

What is the role of a college band and how exciting is it to play at UH football games?

"I think it's important, especially for college football, that there is a band there. It just feeds into the atmosphere, like the cheerleaders and dancers. It fills the voids. Sometimes we're playing music and (the crowd will) react to it. They do get into it and they dance. They cheer with us, because we do some cheers. We do cadence after a huge play, whether there is a touchdown or an interception, and that's exciting. The times when we're on the field and playing, and the crowd just reacts (are the best). They get engaged with the music, and at the end they are applauding. It's usually when the games are good.

"In the beginning of the game, I would say it can get exciting if there are a lot of people there. Sometimes the stadium is pretty empty. Halftime is definitely exciting because we get to get out in front of the audience and perform a little bit."
