Advertiser columnist
Ferd Lewis

Advertiser columnist Ferd Lewis has been forecasting the UH football season since 1980. How good are his predictions? Well, he’s spearheaded The Advertiser team in its Pigskin Picks contest and has come out a winner almost every year. This year, Lewis analyzes the UH season, taking it, as coaches would say, game by game.

Despite some tough road games, Lewis sees the Warriors finishing the regular season with a 9-4.

Sept. 2 At Alabama Sept. 16 UNLV
Does UH really have a snowball’s chance in Tuscaloosa? How much of a letdown will there be for Nevada-Las Vegas after the Alabama game?

With temperatures that could be the in the 90s, snowball is a pretty good metaphor to use here.
Let’s put it this way: in 1992 UH beat Oregon in Eugene. In 1973 it knocked off Washington in Seattle. And in 1955 it beat Nebraska in Lincoln. It will take something above and beyond one of those to pull a stunner out of Tuscaloosa.
Alabama 33, UH 21
There might be one if not for the open date after Alabama. UH isn’t Fresno State, which turns into Humpty Dumpty after playing brand name teams, and this is the home opener, so expect a good effort from the Warriors.
UH 36, UNLV 21

Sept. 23 at Boise State Sept. 30 Eastern Illinois
UH has been outscored 127-34 in two games on the blue turf of Boise. Can the Warriors make a game of it this time? Will Eastern Illinois be this season’s so-called “trap door” game?

A game, yes.
A victory, probably not. But Colt Brennan should give UH more of a shot than it’s had in its first two trips there.
Boise State 35, UH 31

No, it will be the football version of AYSO — everybody plays.
UH 48, Eastern Illinois 17

Oct. 7 Nevada Oct. 14 at Fresno State
Does Nevada have the Warriors’ number? Will the Warriors get their usual welcome-to-hell reception in Fresno?

Only in Reno. At Aloha Stadium, UH has the Wolf Pack’s number.
In this series the house always wins. Which means it is UH’s turn.
UH 28, Nevada 21
Undoubtedly. But after playing in front of nearly 93,000 in Tuscaloosa, 41,031-seat Bulldog Stadium loses a lot of its edge. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs still have just enough bite.
Fresno State 36, UH 31

Oct. 21 at New Mexico State Oct. 28 Idaho
Why is the state of New Mexico called “The Land of Enchantment?” Last year UH beat Idaho, 24-0. Can the it play a perfect game this year?

For Brennan and Davone Bess, it is because of games like this.
UH 48, NMSU 17
Yes, but they won’t
need to.
UH 52, Idaho 14

Nov.4 at Utah State Nov. 11 Louisiana Tech
Should the Warriors be worried about this one? How long of a trip is this for the Bulldogs?

Only if they don’t bring their parkas, hard-warmers and mittens because it is Nov. 4.
UH 31, Utah State 21
One made even more arduous by the ones to Nebraska, Texas A&M, Clemson, Boise State, San Jose State and North Texas State that have preceded it. And this isn’t even the last one for the season.
UH 44, Louisiana Tech 20

NOV. 18 San Jose St. NOV. 25 Purdue
Will Dick Tomey’s first Western Athletic Conference game at Aloha Stadium in 20 years be memorable? What is a Boilermaker, anyway?

Not for the Spartans.
UH 42, San Jose State 28
Something Purdue head coach Joe Tiller drinks to forget seasons like this.
UH 38, Purdue 33

Dec. 2 Oregon State
Will Oregon State be fired up the week after playing state rival Oregon?

The Beavers had better be because this could be the make-or-break game for their bowl hopes.
OSU 42, UH 39
