K5 onfield cameraman for UH football games
Aaron Brooks

Aaron Brooks' best memory was seeing Tim Chang break the career passing record.

RICHARD AMBO | The Honolulu Advertiser

He gets into the faces of the UH players. He's in the middle of the action. He's been in the Aloha Stadium end zone on many occasions but hasn't scored a touchdown. Aaron Brooks, a big-time sports fan from Pasadena, Calif., has been an on-field, hand-held cameraman for the past three years for K5. He's covered every home game since 2003.

When things get chaotic, when players are shuffling in and out and the crowd is on its feet, explain how you can manage to stay focused on only one part of the action through the lens of the camera? Also, tell us about your best memory filming UH football?

"When the crowd is going crazy I'll turn my attention to the fans. From the student body to the cheerleaders, any emotion is good emotion through the lens of the camera. I'll try to put Vili on when he pumps the crowd and the players up. I will also shoot the players who made the big plays that started the crowd frenzy to get their reaction, so the viewers at home can get more of a personal look at the players. The players usually have something to say to the fans. Sometimes it can be easy to get caught up in the action but the director will sharply remind me that I am there to work and not watch the game.

"My best memory of taping UH football would have to be Tim Chang breaking the passing record. It was pretty unreal to be there to capture history and the personal moment that was shared when Tim gave the game ball to his dad. More than that though is the aloha that the fans give to the team. When I walk up and down the sidelines I hear people calling for me to put them on TV and when I do they just love it from the older to the younger they all support the home team."
