Long-time UH football statistician
Nelson Tokuhama

For nearly 30 seasons, Nelson Tokuhama has been in the Aloha Stadium press box, getting the numbers right for all to see.

Nelson Tokuhama, an 'Aiea Na Ali'i and University of Hawai'i alum, has been a statistician at UH football games for 29 years. The statistics Tokuhama helps to compile end up in daily newspapers, on national wire services and are submitted to the NCAA. He has no recollection of the last regular season home game he missed over the years, but this may be attributed more to memory loss than reliability. Tokuhama is employed by Stratacom, a printing and graphics company.

What do you enjoy most about compiling statistics for UH football games and what have been your best memories while on the job?"

"The excitement of the games and the people I work with are what make it so enjoyable. We all try to 'get it right' in spite of the noise and chaos going on around us. It is definitely challenging, especially if our computer freezes and the Warriors are on offense. Unfortunately this past year, we lost two of our longtime mentors, Jesse Freeby and Bob Nagatani (both passed away). It's people like them, along with Eddie Inouye (retired Sports Information Director), who make the entire football experience so special. Over the years you forget about most of the games, but never the friends you make."
