Punahou School quarterback
Brett Kan

Punahou quarterback Brett Kan has found the strength to discuss the bitter end to the Buffanblu's season last year.

Punahou senior quarterback Brett Kan's last pass of the 2005 season is one he cannot forget. Trailing 28-21 with 2:31 left in the game, Punahou started its final drive from its 26 and moved to the Kahuku 3 with 28 seconds left. On first-and-goal from the 3, Kan rolled right and tried to hit wideout Miah Ostrowski coming across from the left side. But defensive back Suaesi Tuimanunei got between the ball and Ostrowski for the game-saving interception that resulted in a touchback and ended Punahou's hopes of winning its first state football title.

It was a month before Kan could review the tape of the play. Yet, he hasn't let it affect him off the field. He takes Advanced Placement courses, maintains a 3.9 grade-point average and has a 2,160 (of a possible 2,400) SAT score. Based on past interactions with him, we felt he had the character to talk about the experience. He admits he is still not comfortable watching the play, but he has tried to learn from the experience.

What happened on that play and what have you learned from that?

"I threw it straight at him (Miah Ostrowski). I could've lobbed it over the defenders in the back of the end zone and I think Miah would've had it. Also, I think if I were a little bit quicker I probably could've thrown it to River (Kim) in the corner. If I hit it on my first step, I could've hit River on the post corner. I took a little long, he got covered up, I took a look at Miah. I was looking at the tape, if I threw over the defenders in the back of the end zone, I think he could've got it.

"No matter how many times I watch it, it's a hard thing. It's given me motivation. Every time I see that, it makes me angry, kind of burns inside of me. I don't ever want to feel that again. It was horrible. It's given me the motivation to really work this offseason and to get back there (the state championship) and do it this time. I have one more shot this year. I just have to take it.

In a way, it was probably a little good for me because I probably didn't work as hard as I did before. This year, I really worked hard to get my arm strength better.

"Every quarterback will have something go wrong throughout his career. (The interception) didn't make me happy, but it made me a better player."
