Daughter-in-law pinned under car in apparent accident

Advertiser Staff

It appears that an incident yesterday in Waipahu, in which a 57-year-old woman ran over her 25-year-old daughter-in-law, was accidental in which case no criminal charges will be filed, police said this morning.

The older woman reportedly went to a home on Halelehua Street to pick up her granddaughter. Police said the daughter-in-law walked toward the rear of the car to remove the baby from a child restraint seat when the mother-in-law, who had turned to talk to the daughter-in-law, hit the gas pedal instead of the brake, police said.

The car, a 1998 Mazda Protege, lurched back and pinned the younger woman underneath, police said.

A city ambulance crew took the woman to The Queen's Medical Center in serious condition with leg and head injuries. Her condition deteriorated to critical after she reached the emergency room, police said.

Police said they are continuing their investigation of the incident.
