Wai'anae's Bartels wins Roxy Pro women's surf event

Wai'anae's Melanie Bartels won the Roxy Pro women's surfing contest today at Sunset Beach.

Bartels trailed for most of the 30-minute final, then received a 7.33 on her final wave in the last minute to secure the win.

She received $10,000 for the victory.

Australia's Stephanie Gilmore placed second, but took the lead in the women's standings for the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. The Roxy Pro was the second of three events in the Triple Crown for women.

Kaua'i's Rochelle Ballard was third, and Australian Chelsea Georgeson was fourth.

The waves are in the 4- to 6-foot range today at Sunset Beach.

Australian surfers Layne Beachley and Melanie Redman-Carr were eliminated in today's semifinals. Beachley and Redman-Carr entered the contest ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively, on the women's World Championship Tour.

Because neither Beachley nor Redman-Carr won this contest, the women's 2006 world championship will be decided at the final event of the year, the Billabong Pro Maui at Honolua Bay next week.

The men's O'Neill World Cup of Surfing also completed its third round today at Sunset Beach. Eight-time world champion Kelly Slater of Florida and defending Triple Crown of Surfing champion Andy Irons from Kaua'i advanced through their respective heats.

The men's contest needs one more day of competition to determine a champion.
