Seeing red? Celebrate World AIDS Day today

Advertiser Staff

Red ribbons will be worn all over Hawai'i — and the world — today in celebration of World AIDS Day.

The first World AIDS Day was declared by the World Health Organization in 1988 to help bring attention, understanding and support across the globe to the fight against the deadly disease.

Here in Hawai'i, Gov. James Aiona will deliver remarks at a health fair in observance of World AIDS Day. The fair is at Tamarind Park/Bishop Square. Aiona will speak at noon. The fair runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

At 6 p.m., Church of the Crossroads will host a World AIDS Day service, including a special film presentation "HIV in Hawaii: Local People, Local Stories."

It will also include the presentation of the Suzanne Richmond-Crum Award, a display of AIDS memorial quilt panels and reading of the official World AIDS Day proclamation.

Church of the Crossroads is located at 1212 University Ave.
