Waikiki sand replacement project begins

Advertiser Staff

A plan to replenish Waikiki's famed beaches with some 10,000 cubic yards of sand has resumed.

The pumps began working at 1 p.m., then had to stop for an equipment failure.

But the work has resumed, officials said.

The plan is to pump sand onto Kuhio Beach from a barge 2,000 feet offshore.

Peter Young, chairman of the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, said workers with American Marine Corp., a local dredging company contracted to do the work, had to find equipment to repair a clogged line.
