Army general of Hawaiian ancestry awarded third star

Maj. Gen. Joseph F. Peterson, the first Army officer of Hawaiian ancestry to be promoted to the rank of lieutenant general, will pin on his third star during a ceremony this month at Fort Shafter.The ceremony for Peterson, a graduate of the Star of the Sea School and Saint Louis School in Honolulu, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 11 at the Hale Ikena Community Club at Fort Shafter.
Peterson was commissioned an armor officer in 1972.
Over the past 34 years, he has served in positions of increasing responsibility including commanding two Army divisions. His most recent assignment was as the commanding general, Civilian Police Assistance Training Team, Multi-National Security Transition Command in Iraq. After his promotion, Peterson will be the deputy commander for the U.S. Army Forces Command at Fort McPherson, Ga.
