Advertiser Staff

The Department of Land and Natural Resources will conduct a public information meeting Dec. 8 on ferry system improvements planning for the Manele Small Boat Harbor on Lana'i.

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at the Lana'i High and Elementary School cafeteria.

The project consists of constructing a new comfort station, an administrative office, paved access roads and parking areas, water mains and fire hydrants, a sewage pump station and force main, a sewage pumpout station, a fuel-dispensing facility, utilities and street lights, a covered waiting area, drainage systems, landscaping, closure of large-capacity cesspools and accessibility improvements.

Maui Master Builders has the $13.8 million contract for the job, which is expected to take a year to complete. More than $10.6 million of the cost is being paid by the federal government, with the state picking up the rest.

KALIHI

100 STUDENTS WILL 'SHOP WITH A COP'

One hundred students from Kalihi Waena, Fern and Kalihi Kai elementary schools will be treated to a Christmas shopping spree by 30 Honolulu police officers tomorrow in the annual "Shop with a Cop" program, co-sponsored by Kmart and HPD.

The 6:30 a.m. event will take place at Kmart's Iwilei store, said Sgt. John Kauwenaole, the Kalihi police district's Weed & Seed coordinator.

O'AHU

NO TRASH PICKUP ON THE HOLIDAYS

O'ahu residents whose trash is normally collected on Mondays and Thursdays are being warned that refuse pickup will not occur on Christmas and New Year's days, both of which fall on a Monday this year.

City Environmental Services Director Eric Takamura said residents should be extra careful in managing their household waste during that time. He recommended that food waste be double-bagged to reduce odors.

For those wishing to dispose of their refuse on their own, Takamura said, the city's six convenience centers at 'Ewa, La'ie, Wahiawa, Wai'anae, Waimanalo and Waipahu will be open Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

Christmas and New Year's Day are the only two days of the year that the city does not pick up trash.

MANOA

LEGO LEAGUE COMPETITION SET

Teams of young Lego enthusiasts and their mentors from all over the state will converge at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa Campus Center Ballroom tomorrow from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for the First Lego League Hawai'i State Championship Tournament.

Teams have spent the past eight weeks or more designing and building robots for this year's challenge — "Nano Quest." The robots have been programmed to solve real-world challenges, according to spokesman Kevin Dang.

The league is for children ages 9-14. The event is free and open to the public.
