Two to be honored at tennis banquet

 •  Final preparations are key to running successful race

Leslie Kawano and Ed Britos will be honored by the Hawai'i-Pacific Tennis Foundation at its annual meeting and awards banquet on Dec. 15.

Kawano, a freshman at 'Iolani, will be honored as the 2006 junior player of the year, and Britos, who has helped out in numerous events, will be honored as the 2006 volunteer of the year.

The featured speaker at the banquet will be Dan Dorzynski, a wheelchair athlete and entrepreneur.

Dorzynski, who has lived in Hawai'i since 1997, will speak on achievement, motivation and life challenges.

The banquet will run from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Hilton Waikiki Prince Kuhio Hotel. Tickets are $40. There will also be a silent and live auction, featuring equipment, merchandise, lessons and the chance to play doubles with former tennis pro Luke Jensen and current professional Dennis Lajola in January.

VOLLEYBALL TRYOUTS SET FOR EAST O'AHU BOYS

The East O'ahu Boys Volleyball Club will hold mandatory tryouts on Monday and Wednesday for experienced players from ages 16 to 18.

There is no cost for the tryouts, which run from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday and from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday. Both tryouts will be at Star of the Sea Gym at 4469 Malia St.

BOXING BOUTS SET FOR PALOLO DISTRICT PARK

Hawai'i Boxing will have its 2006 finale on Dec. 16 at Palolo District Park (2007 Palolo Ave.) at 6:30 p.m.

Amateur fighters are still being accepted for bouts. Boxers must be registered with USA-Boxing ($40). Weigh-in will be at noon on Dec. 16 at Palolo District Park.

Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for kids 10 and under.

MAUI SURF AND SAND RACES SCHEDULED JAN. 14

The Maui Surf and Sand 15K and 5K is set for Jan. 14.

The downhill run starts at Napili Park near Kapalua and goes through Old Lahaina Town.

There will be medals for all finishers, and either a T-shirt or tanktop for all registered runners who show up at the Lahaina Cannery Mall to pick up their race number.

For the 15K race, entry is $60 ($54 with valid Maui driver's license), and for the 5K race, the cost is $45.
