Hickam team evacuates burned sailors

Advertiser Staff

A cargo jet and its crew from Hickam Air Force Base has evacuated six badly burned sailors from Guam and transported the victims to a burn center in San Antonio, Texas.

Air Force officials said the sailors were injured Friday during an accident aboard the USS Frank Cable, a submarine tender, when a steam line burst.

A Hickam-based C-17 Globemaster III flew to Andersen Air Force Base on Guam to pick up the injured sailors.

The jet returned to Hickam early yesterday morning, and the burn patients were transferred to Tripler Army Medical Center until the jet and crew members had completed preparations to fly the injured sailors to the Burn Center at Brooks Army Medical Center in San Antonio.
