Family members helping include, from left, Ann Piamonte, holding Hailey Badis-Arquette, Brandon Piamonte, 12; Francisco Silva, 1; and Taylor Ann Silva, 6. The Silva family's lease will soon expire, which could make this their last Christmas display.

Isabel Silva says the most important Christmas decoration in her yard is the creche because that's what Christmas is all about.

Isabel Silva, 77, slowly shuffled around her carport, going through dozens of boxes stacked in neat groups and packed with enough holiday decorations to last a lifetime.

The white-haired woman with soulful eyes suffers from arthritis, but achy joints and sore legs won't stop her from crawling under her home to get her stored Christmas goodies or spending hours each day making sure every ornament, garland and light is hung perfectly in place in her front yard.

One of her daughters says it's therapy; her son calls it pride. "It's tradition," Silva said.

For nearly 50 years, John, 87, and Isabel Silva have decked out their Kapalama home with a signature Christmas outdoor display. Their winter wonderland at 1420 Kapalama Ave. is among hundreds of Island homes being festooned for the holidays this year. (See Listing.)

The display started when one of Isabel Silva's children saw a yard festively decorated. He wanted his parents to do the same. Silva's first attempt was a modest manger scene.

"Then it just got bigger and bigger and bigger," Silva said, laughing.

The family members — including eight children, 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren — have their own favorite memories of the elaborate annual display.

"It was easy for my boyfriends to find my house," joked Silva's daughter, Ann Piamonte, 46, of Kapolei.

Reminiscing this year is bittersweet for the Silvas because this may be their last Christmas at the family's Kapalama "gathering place."

John and Isabel Silva live next door to the Bishop Museum, which owns their land. The Silvas will have to move out by October when their lease ends.

It's a trying time for the elderly couple because they want to stay. Despite their situation, the Silvas are trying to keep the season bright the best way they know how.

"Look, they're still decorating," said Piamonte, pointing to her mother, who was decorating a tree in the hot afternoon sun. "They're just going on with their lives, hoping God will bless them."

During a recent afternoon at the Silva home, four generations of Silvas gathered to help Isabel hang ornaments and garlands on artificial trees in the front yard.

Their two-story house, painted a brownish-red with pine green trim, is the perfect backdrop for their hodgepodge of holiday trimmings: a nativity scene, penguins fashioned out of plastic soda bottles, a Hawaiian Santa, Hawaiian-themed Christmas tree, snowman, gingerbread house, starlike ornaments made from Styrofoam egg cartons, and more.

Among those helping Silva was Piamonte's son, Brandon. The 12-year-old said he doesn't mind helping his grandmother because he knows it's a worthy cause.

"It's fun," said Brandon, hammering down a hand-painted "Let It Snow" sign in the front yard. "I like people to be happy."
