WAC Tafralis lifts San Jose State to 8th win

Associated Press

Adam Tafralis threw three touchdown passes and rushed for a career-high 76 yards, helping host San Jose State end a 12-game losing streak to Fresno State with a 24-14 victory yesterday.

Christopher Owens intercepted two passes, one in the final three minutes, and Matt Castelo made a key interception inside the 5-yard line for the New Mexico Bowl-bound Spartans (8-4, 5-3 WAC), who last beat Fresno State in 1990.

"Eight wins is an excellent football season," San Jose State coach Dick Tomey said. "This sets a course for us for the future, with what was a very young team. I've never been on a team that played so many freshmen, but we had a thread of senior leadership on this team that made a huge difference for us."

Dwayne Wright rushed for 106 yards and scored a touchdown for the Bulldogs (4-8, 4-4), who ended with a losing season for the first time since 1998.

Tom Brandstater threw for 215 yards on 21-of-37 passing for the Bulldogs, but he also threw four interceptions.

Dwight Lowry intercepted his ninth pass, a school record, for the Spartans.

"It was something I envisioned this week," Lowry said. "I thought about it and was able to make it happen."

Tafralis threw for 206 yards as the Spartans finished the regular season with five more wins than last year. The eight wins is the most since the Spartans finished 9-2-1 in 1990, also their last appearance in a bowl game.

NEW MEXICO ST. 50, LOUISIANA TECH 23

Chase Holbrook passed and ran for four touchdowns and set a pair of NCAA records by a sophomore in New Mexico State's win over Louisiana Tech at Las Cruces, N.M.

Holbrook, who broke numerous school records this season, set NCAA records by a sophomore for passing yards and total offense in a season. His 4,619 passing yards surpassed the previous mark of 4,560 by Ty Detmer of BYU in 1989 and Holbrook's total offense of 4,541 yards broke the previous mark of 4,469 by Hawai'i's Tim Chang in 2002.

Holbrook completed 41 of 54 passes for 514 yards.

In a meeting of Western Athletic Conference also-rans, New Mexico State (4-8, 2-6 WAC) finished the season with a two-game winning streak, the Aggies' first in two years. Louisiana Tech (3-10, 1-7 WAC) lost its fourth straight.

Holbrook extended his school record for TD passes in a season to 34 with scoring passes of 63 and 6 yards to Derek Dubois and 15 yards to A.J. Harris. Holbrook, who scored on a short run in the fourth quarter, accounted for 38 TDs this season and set another school record with his 10th 300-yard passing game.

The Aggies also had three rushing TDs, two by David Romaka and another by Chris Nwoko.
