Consultant reports $113M loss in Hawaiian Tel contract

Advertiser Staff

McLean, Va.-based BearingPoint Inc. said it lost $113.3 million in 2005 under its contract to build new back-office systems for Hawaiian Telcom. That's more than the $96 million estimated loss reported by the management consultant earlier this year.

Hawaiian Telcom hired McLean BearingPoint Inc. last year to help as it took over Hawai'i's largest telephone network from Verizon Communications. The April takeover was far from smooth, with some customers getting billed double and many complaining about difficulty getting through to service representatives to get billing problems resolved.

Hawaiian Telcom has yet to restore its systems to levels before the transition. Hawaiian Telcom and BearingPoint are currently in talks concerning liability and damages for the problems.
