Honolulu ranks 4th on list of safest large metro areas

Honolulu ranks as the fourth-safest large metropolitan area to live, work and raise a family, according to a study by Farmers Insurance Group.

The company's Most Secure U.S. Places to Live ranking looked at factors such as crime rates, extreme weather, environmental hazards, terrorism threats, job loss and risk of natural disasters. Among small cities (those with populations of less than 150,000), St. George, Utah ranked highest. Las Cruces, N.M. was tops among medium-sized cities with 140,000 to 500,000 residents.

Here's Farmer Insurance's the ranking of cities with populations of more than 500,000 residents:

2. Portland-South Portland-Biddeford, Maine

3. Las Vegas-Paradise, Nev.

4. Honolulu, Hawai'i

5. Sacramento-Arden-Arcade-Roseville, Calif.

6. Scranton-Wilkes-Barre-Hazelton, Pa.

7. San Diego-Carlsbad-San Marcos, Calif.

8. Bethesda-Gaithersburg-Frederick, Md.

9. Syracuse, N.Y.

10. Santa Ana-Anaheim-Irvine, Calif.

11. El Paso, Texas

12. Albany-Troy-Schenectady, N.Y.

13. Rochester, N.Y.

14. Buffalo-Niagara Falls, N.Y.

15. Oxnard-Thousand Oaks- Ventura, Calif.

16. Poughkeepsie-Newburgh-Middletown, N.Y.

17. Nassau-Suffolk, N.Y.

18. Harrisburg-Carlisle, Pa.
