Inside Dish disses Brennan's Heisman legitimacy
Advertiser Staff
As University of Hawai'i fans celebrate "In Colt We Trust," at least one writer at a major sports publication is using Colt Brennan's gaudy statistics as a reason not to vote for the UH junior.College football columnist Matt Hayes of The Sporting News took on Brennan's legitimacy as a Heisman candidate in his "Inside Dish" column yesterday:
"I'm excited as the next guy about Hawai'i QB Colt Brennan's record-setting season. But in three games against BCS teams, the Rainbows were 1-2 and Brennan had seven touchdowns and four interceptions. Against the remainder of a dog-filled schedule and I'm throwing Boise State among the dogs, too he had 46 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He's Timmy Chang, everyone. He's not a Heisman Trophy candidate. ..."
Hayes, for the record, lives in Orlando, Fla. and doesn't say if he's watched Brennan or Boise State, which is undefeated and the WAC champion, play this season. He's covered college football since 1990 and uses the column to tackle several topics, including the BCS, rumors of Pete Carroll returning to the NFL and more.
His column can be read at www.sportingnews.com/experts/matt-hayes/index.html.
Brennan leads the nation in passing efficiency (182.80 rating) and total offense (410.85 yards per game). His 4,990 passing yards leads the nation, as do the 358 points he's responsible for.
With one more touchdown in the Hawaii Bowl on Dec. 24 against Arizona State Brennan will tie the single season mark of 54 set by Houston's David Klingler in 1990.
