A two-time Preseason Junior College All-America safety has accepted a football scholarship from the University of Hawai'i.
Erik Robinson of Navarro Junior College in Texas said he will sign his national letter of intent Dec. 20, the first day of the early-commitment period.
This month, Robinson will earn an associate degree, an eligibility requirement for an incoming junior-college transfer. UH still is awaiting word on the number of football scholarships it will have available in January. That is why it has not been determined if Robinson will join the Warriors in January or at the start of training camp in August.
"All I know is I'm going to be a Warrior," said Robinson, who is 5 feet 11 and 193 pounds, and can run 40 yards in 4.46 seconds.
Robinson's 115 tackles were the most by a defensive back in the nation this season. He also recovered three fumbles, returning one for a 60-yard touchdown, intercepted two passes and forced two fumbles.
Robinson was named to the JC GridWire Preseason All-America teams in 2005 and 2006.
Robinson, who was raised in Dallas, turned down offers from Louisiana Tech and Louisiana-Monroe.
He said he made his decision after attending the Warriors' banquet last night.
"I like the environment," said Robinson, who also praised his recruiter, assistant coach Jeff Reinebold. "It's like a family here. I wanted to go to a place that felt like home."
He said he looks forward to being reunited with his hosts, UH cornerbacks Myron Newberry and Gerard Lewis.
"Those are my Texas friends," Robinson said. "We bonded."
Robinson said he tries to play like Ed Reed of the Ravens. "He's always around the ball," Robinson said, "I'm always around the ball."
Robinson will have three years to play two seasons for the Warriors, whose starting free safety, Leonard Peters, is completing his UH eligibility after the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl on Christmas Eve.
