Idaho's Erickson denies being approached for ASU job

Associated Press

MOSCOW, Idaho — Idaho coach Dennis Erickson today denied being approached by Arizona State about its head football coaching vacancy.

A columnist for The Oregonian newspaper in Portland, Ore., citing a source close to the process, reported that Erickson was in talks with ASU officials about the job that became vacant when Dirk Koetter was fired.

Koetter will coach his final game against Hawaii in the Dec. 24 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl at Aloha Stadium.

But Erickson, who was in California on a recruiting trip, told The Spokesman-Review online edition that he hasn't heard from ASU.

"I don't know where he's getting his information," Erickson said. "I think they're just beginning with that thing. I wouldn't be surprised if somebody did call, but I haven't heard anything."

Erickson told the Spokesman-Review's Jim Meehan that he would "probably take a look" if contacted by the Sun Devils, however.

Erickson returned to Idaho last spring after a year's hiatus from football. The Vandals posted a 4-8 record, 3-5 in the Western Athletic Conference.

Idaho athletic director Rob Spear said Tuesday he hasn't been contacted by ASU officials. Schools generally ask permission from athletic directors before contacting prospective coaches.
