Sumo coming to Hawai'i, Musashimaru to speak

Advertiser Staff

A Grand Sumo Tournament is coming to Hawai'i in 2007, and a Hawai'i-born Grand Champion will be on hand at a news conference to day to discuss details of the event.

Musashimaru, also known as Fiamalu Penitani of Waianae, will speak at the 10 a.m. news conference along with Mayor Mufi Hannemann.

The conference is being held in the Carla Coray Galleria at the Blaisdell Center.

Musashimaru retired on Oct. 2, 2004, but not before making his mark in Japan's centuries-old national sport.

On May 25, 1999, Musashimaru became the second foreign grand champion and the 67th grand champion overall.

At 6-foot-3 and 500-pounds, Musashimaru competed 14 years before retiring at the age of 33.
