KAHALU'U — A 31-year-old woman was killed in a single-car crash on Kamehameha Highway this morning when the SUV she was a passenger in veered onto the shoulder of the road, hit and bounced over the guardrail and rolled to a stop at a convenience store entrance.

She was pronounced dead at the scene, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for Emergency Medical Services.

The driver of the blue Dodge Durango suffered minor injuries and was taken to Castle Medical Center.

The accident occurred at the 7-Eleven entrance in Kahalu'u at about 4:30 a.m., police said.

"One vehicle, Kahuku-bound," police Lt. Dan Quon said. "The driver fell asleep, hit the guard rail, rolled in the bushes and it stopped at the entrance of the 7-Eleven."

About 20 feet to the right of the bushes where the Durango rolled are four gas pumps. None were hit by any debris.

Workers at the store said the clerk on duty had heard the crash but didn't see it.

Pieces of the vehicle were scattered throughout the bushes and in the convenience store parking lot. The SUV itself was severely mangled, having rolled at least 70 feet after the crash. The back tire from the Durango came to rest near the backside of the store at least 30 yards away from the wreck.

The vehicular homicide department was still investigating the scene at 7:45 a.m.

Quon said speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash.

The death marks the 88th traffic fatality on O'ahu this year.

Quon said the passenger was wearing a seatbelt.
