Two Pearl Harbor ceremonies at Kaneohe Bay today

Advertiser Staff

Two ceremonies are being held today at Kaneohe Bay Marine Corps Base to honor the 65th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

The first ceremony is being held at 7:52 a.m., the exact time that Japanese planes began to strafe the air facility minutes before Pearl Harbor was bombed.

Thirty-three of the 36 PBY aircraft were destroyed on the ground during the attack, and the facilities suffered significant damage.

Only the three sea planes on patrol escaped the attack. Eighteen sailors and one civilian were killed on what was then Naval Air Station Kaneohe.

Survivors of the attack from Patrol Squadron (VP)-11 and the Kaneohe Klippers Association will attend the first ceremony with family members and active duty service members, then move to a classroom for a historical presentation before attending a second ceremony at 10:30 a.m. at the Kaneohe Bay flag pole.
