No problems on North Shore, Leeward Coast from surf

Advertiser Staff

O'ahu Civil Defense is reporting no problems from today's expected high surf.

"We've had 14 volunteers active since about 3:30 this morning on the Leeward Coast and North Shore and the good news is no problems from the surf have been reported at all," said John Cummings, spokesman for O'ahu Civil Defense.

Wave heights were expected to peak around 22 to 28 feet at 6 a.m., but Cummings said the surf has been much smaller so far.

As a precaution, however, civil defense workers have been walking Nanakuli beaches and warning residents about the expected high surf and to be ready to move away from the coastline if necessary.

So far, however, no waves have crossed any roads.

Drivers traveling along the North Shore should still exercise caution as roads can become blocked with sand and debris. Also, beachgoers should stay well away from the water and from spots overlooking the ocean, which could be suddenly inundated by a rogue wave.
