Missile test off Kaua`i fails

Advertiser Staff

LIHU'E, Kaua`i—A planned two-target missile defense test off the Pacific Missile Range Facility at Barking Sands was scrubbed after the target missiles were launched today due to a problem aboard the Navy cruiser USS Lake Erie.

Missile Defense Agency officials in a news release said there was an incorrect system setting that prevented the launch of the first of two interceptor missiles, and since the purpose of the test was to perform twin launches at nearly the same time, the second interceptor's firing was halted.

Navy and Missile Defense Agency officials expect to establish a new date for the test in early 2007.
